Canterbury offers a lot of variation for the keen hunter, from Red Deer to Water fowl and of course rabbits, hares etc.
Gamebird hunting is seasonal and a Hunting Licence is required, full information is available on the Fish and Game website here...

Licence Costs are around $80 for a season... per adult, a licence is not required to shoot on your own land but there are stringent requirements so please check the website if in doubt.
Ducks (water fowl)
Season is first weekend of may till end of July. Bag limits vary depending on location and species but 25 Mallards is the norm. Lead shot is banned from all waterfowl shooting.
Canada Geese
" The North Canterbury region offers the best Canada goose hunting in the country. Large numbers of this premier game bird are available in both high and low country environments..." Fish and Game Website.
May be hunted from May to Novemeber then again from January to April. No bag limit.
Pheasant
Have a 2 day season in june and a limit of 1 cock bird.
Quail
May thru August with a daily limit of 10
