Pleco's are mainly vegetarians or omnivores, so it is
important that there be a fair amount of vegetable matter in their
diets, this is easilly provided with pleco tabs or spirulina (A type of
blue green algae) discs. There is evidenece that for some plecos bog
wood is also an important part of their diet, so be sure to have some
drift wood in your tank if you plan to keep anything other than the
common plecos.

My staple foods, Pleco Chips, Spirulina Discs
(I have to break these up for them to fit through my feeder), and shrimp
pellets mixed with flakes. I have all these available for online
purchase at mikesaquatics

A neat trick a got from sue
and craigs pleco site is when feeding vegetables, stick a
teaspoon through the vegetable and it will sink quickly to the bottom.
Vegetables eaten include Courgette, Brussel Sprouts, Silver Beet,
Cabbage. I grow courgettes in the summer and all my plecos seem to like
them especially the Anscistrus who like to eat away all the skin befoire
starting on the middle. As allways be sure to remover any uneaten food
as it will quickly foul the water. Uneaten corgette tends to float to
the surface making removal easy.

Other foods taken include frozen blood worms,
frozen shrimps, frozen prawns, beef or chicken hearts. When feeding protein based foods like these allways be sure and remove any
excess from the tank as there is great potential to foul the water
quality. |
